Anger Management
Education Program
Anger is not a behavior;
it is an emotion. Negative reaction to anger is the problem. Anger is
not always bad; appropriately directed, anger can result in positive
actions. Anger management refers to the reduction of disruptive, excessive,
angry arousal and expression.
What
is the STAMP Anger Management Program?
The
STAMP anger management program is a series of classes that use a multidisciplinary
approach to defining, identifying, understanding, and managing anger.
The classes are designed to help individuals recognize anger triggers
and their negative impact.
- This is typically
a 10-week group program.
- Each weekly class
is 90 minutes.
What is Taught in the Classes?
Everyone
gets annoyed or angry on occasion. However, frequent and intense anger
is a real problem. The material in the STAMP Program is used to teach
individuals the importance of self-honesty and accepting responsibility
for his or her behavior. The key to managing anger is understanding
that anger-induced behavior is a choice. The goal of the program is
to emphasize alternatives to anger-induced behavior. The program is
designed to prepare individuals to work on their anger; teach them strategies
for change; develop their cognitive coping abilities; and help them
to avoid relapse into maladaptive anger.

How
is Anger a Problem?
Many
individuals have a serious problem with anger. They have developed
an anger habit. Anger is like a drug; people can become addicted to
anger in the same way as they become addicted to tobacco, alcohol,
prescription drugs, or street drugs. In such cases, individuals use
anger as a primary tool for power and control.
When
is Anger a Problem?
Anger
is a problem when it results in emotional, mental, or physical to
any individual. Anger is a problem when it separates families, friends,
colleagues, and co-workers. Anger is an economic problem; it can result
in court costs and other fines, loss of work, and medical expenses.
Changing
Toxic Anger Habits
The
first step to changing toxic, anger habits and addiction is to acknowledge
the problem. Recognizing physiological responses to perceived threats,
having a mental plan to counter these responses, and maintaining self-control
will ultimately result in changed behavior.
Anyone
can become angry --- that is easy!!! But to be angry with the right
person, to the right degree, at the right time, for the right purpose,
and in the right way --- that is not easy.
